Frame grab from forthcoming film, Just Eat It

As we rounded the corner of the large fruit sorting and packing facility, our host pointed out something I wish I could unsee. “Sorry, I just can’t let you film that”

Getting access to film at farms, processors and grocery stores has been the greatest challenge of this film project.  We all waste food, we just rarely every see it. We don’t feel we are building a story that points fingers, we are all in this together.

We looked up at the large packing plant and saw a massive conveyer belt moving a river of freshly picked peaches. ” You’d think that’s going into the plant for packing ” noted our host, ” That’s what’s coming out, the rejects”

The constant river of summer flame peaches poured into a dumpster the size of a semi trailer. This runs all day, everyday, all season long.

“We’d sell this produce if there was a market for it” he continued “They are just not perfect enough”

So who drives this waste? Industry or the consumer?
